To My Grandfather on His 90th Birthday

To Papa on His Birthday~

I don’t know a more important thing for a person to have in the twilight of their life than a great legacy.  Winston Churchill once said, “you make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.”

Measured by this axiom, you have lived an extraordinary life.

Your professional contributions are enviable.  You worked on projects that sent America to space and put a man on the moon, planes that weighed 18 tons that soared through the air at 1800 MPH, and jaws that saved lives.

You were a loving and devoted husband to my nana who sang your praises.

A loving,  kind, and patient father to 7 children.

Cubs Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and veteran who served his country.

More importantly- you were the best grandfather a person could ask for. You taught me how to snap and whistle, read a blueprint, garden, play chess, appreciate history,  the importance of family, and our family history.

You did all of this with great character, intelligence, humility, and grace.

You have given much more than we should have hoped to receive and in the process set a great example of what a good man, husband, father, grandfather, and American should be.

The best tribute I can think of is to carry on this legacy to the next generation.

I am forever grateful to have you as my grandfather.
